When I first applied for the Master of Arts in Education (MAED) program at Michigan State I wanted to have a concentration in Technology and English. Before even starting this program, I really took a look at my classroom dynamics, what areas I needed more training in, and my prior educational experience. After reflecting, I contemplated over what concentration would provide me the maximum opportunity to grow as an educator. In the end, I decided that it was for the best that I switch my concentration over to Special Education. Throughout my teaching career, I have been in a full inclusive classroom and have taught students with many different disabilities; however, I did not have any classes within my undergraduate degree on this topic. During my application process, I had many students with IEPs including one student with Autism and one student that has developmental delay. These two students, along with all of my other Special Education students, are the reason why I chose a concentration in Special Education.

Throughout my experience, my professional goal has not changed since I wrote it in February of 2012, before entering the MAED program. As a matter of fact, my passion for learning about Special Education has grown immensely! Now I have five students with IEPs in my class of 30 students. Among these students' disabilities are the following: emotional impairments, learning disability, developmental delay, speech disorders and Autism. There is so much more for me to learn about Special Education that will help me become a better educator. I am very pleased with my choice to obtain my Master’s Degree with a concentration in Special Education and I believe I made the right decision to change my concentration.
